Story 1 - The Basement

Starting from the ground up! Before we could begin building up, we had to reinforce what was down below. The house was sitting on about 12 or so wood piers that were leaning or twisted, and subsequently some of the beams resting on the piers were damaged or had shifted.
The wood piers were replaced with concrete and new beams installed. As you can imagine, this was a very time-consuming and difficult task as there was not much room in the crawl space (as you can see). Deep holes were dug for each of the concrete footings and the house was jacked up to replace the beams. Multiple laser levels were used during this process.
Stairs leading to basement. The trapdoor to the basement is in what used to be the screened-in sleeping porch. This area is now a laundry/mud /sunroom.

Story 2 - The Stairwell

Where to put the stairs? That was a big question for several years only because Pop said that he had wanted to come and go without being a bother to anyone. He originally wanted to place the stairwell outside. Flip forward years later and after much study Pop had decided that the only real place it could structurally go was in the center of the house from the back hallway. He was right of course, but I made one change with the engineer. Instead of using the hallway and making a straight and fully enclosed run, I started in the Den/Office keeping the stairway an open concept where there would be natural light coming from the attic window to the Den, also making the stairway feel more roomy. I did however design it so that in the future if someone wanted to enclose it and add a door in the hallway, they could..

Story 3 - The Attic Dormer

This space is great. The table is perfect for my projects or enjoying hot tea with my laptop. I just pull out whichever cart I need (sewing, craft, genealogy) from a closet and roll it right up to the table. All the furnishings in this area are heirlooms handed down. The painting of the dog was done by my great grandmother when she was a young teenager.
