Mural Stories

FQ Story’s two mural projects grew from suggestions made after the popularity of the “2018 Mural Festival.” Our projects had many facets. The main purpose was to depict the achievement of our local historic preservation advocates in spite the over 200 homes in our historic neighborhoods being destroyed. They had been demolished to make way for the I-10 Freeway and tunnel in the 1980’s.

To give homage to those homes lost to progress, the Story Preservation Association Steering Committee added funding to their 2019 and 2020 fiscal budgets for the creation of the two large “Statement Pieces”.

The muralist we selected for both pieces of art was Lucretia Torva. Ms. Torva is renowned for her realistic works of art on large scale formats. The creation process is shown in pictures taken during the installation. The images rendered in the art were inspired by photos submitted by local residents.

9th Avenue & West Moreland

The first mural was located on the north side of the I-10 sound barrier wall. It was titled “Then and Now”. Its installation became part of one of the 2018 Home Tour events.

The second mural was painted on the south side of the I-10 sound barrier wall near the footbridge entrance. The “FQ Story Centennial Year” was celebrated as the historic theme for this mural.
