Porch Life

Stroll down any street in Story, and you’ll be hard pressed to find many homes with barren porches. Many porches serve as outdoor rooms, outfitted with seating, plants and even cupboards. They’re a popular perch from which to watch the neighborhood and to linger with family and friends.

Porches also signal the personality of the people in the home, and are a handy place to display the holiday decor of the season.

Keep an eye out for the centerpiece of porches: the home’s front door. Styles ranging from carved wood to fanciful ironwork front homes that have replaced their original entries.

Many homes that have retained their original doors feature the trademarked PeekDor, a miniature iron door that opens from the inside to “peek” out at what’s outside.

Story boasts a rainbow of colors on the main entries to its historic homes: persimmon red, periwinkle blue, apple green. One neighbor once said he moved to Story so he could paint his front door yellow - an expression of the individual touches people bring to their homes.
